Bluegrass Basics for Mandolin

For players that have some ability on the mandolin who want to achieve that bluegrass sound! We’ll learn how to take the bluesy techniques inspired by Bill Monroe, and put them into practice when taking breaks and fills. Included is a step-by-step approach to ‘chop chord’ rhythm backup, and exercises for taming and strengthening that pesky pinky.

Double Stops for Bluegrass-Style Mandolin

The use of double stops (two notes picked simultaneously) is a common technique for playing both lead and backup in the world of bluegrass mandolin. Understanding how these chords are created and used can add greatly to the range of tools you have at hand when playing. This workshop will explore those concepts with an eye towards enhancing and extending your ability to create interesting solos for instrumental and vocal accompaniment. He will cover strumming techniques for Brazilian rhythms, common chord progressions, and melody playing, and will teach several popular choro tunes. Brazilian Choro for Mandolin Part 2

Sat., May 15, 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m., $35 ($60 for both of this instructor’s workshops).

Learn to use the Harmony Tree method, a listening/perception tool created in Brazil that will unlock the secrets of choro. We will analyze and perform several famous choro compositions, studying ensemble playing, harmony, and counter-point. Explore jazz/Brazilian choro chords for the mandolin, with an emphasis on hearing and creating your own unique voicings. For beginning to advanced mandolin players familiar with choro, or students who have attended Part 1.
